The London Festival of Architecture and Wandsworth Council are delighted to announce ‘Beyond the Bridge’ as the winning design for the Transforming Falcon Road Bridge competition. Led by GPAD and POoR Collective, in collaboration with MRG Studio, Sutton Vane Associates, Cundall, and MDA Consulting, the visionary proposal reimagines the bridge near Clapham Junction as a vibrant community landmark that prioritises sustainability, safety, and local identity.
A Vision for Transformation
Falcon Road Bridge, a vital route for pedestrians and commuters, has long been a space in need of revitalization. The winning design proposes a dramatic transformation, addressing community concerns around safety, lighting, and noise. Creative interventions include artistic lighting installations to enhance visibility and celebrate local cultural events, and lush micro-gardens to improve air quality and biodiversity.
The underpass will be reimagined as an inspiring and inclusive environment, featuring a ‘Memories of Wandsworth’ wayfinding wall co-designed with local residents. This element will celebrate local stories and landmarks through dynamic murals and public art, embedding the bridge within the cultural fabric of Wandsworth. Acoustic panels integrated into the design will reduce noise, creating a more welcoming space for all users, including neurodivergent individuals.
Rooted in Community
This community-centred approach reflects the design team’s commitment to creating meaningful connections between people and place. Extensive collaboration with local residents and organizations throughout the design process ensures the project resonates deeply with the Wandsworth community. The project also aligns with Wandsworth’s upcoming role as the London Borough of Culture 2025, emphasizing culture and creativity as drivers of health, happiness, and opportunity for residents.
A Landmark for the Future
Rosa Rogina, Director of the London Festival of Architecture, described the winning design as a powerful example of architecture’s potential to foster connection and inclusivity. “Beyond the Bridge beautifully embodies the spirit of transformation and inclusivity that lies at the heart of the London Festival of Architecture. By weaving the voices and stories of Wandsworth’s communities into the design, this project celebrates local identity in a deeply meaningful way,” she said.
Simon Hogg, Leader of Wandsworth Council, expressed his enthusiasm for the project and its significance for the borough. “This new bridge design will provide a better and brighter route and create a new landmark for the borough during our year as London Borough of Culture 2025,” he said.
Looking Ahead
Work on Beyond the Bridge will begin soon, with completion expected by Autumn 2025. Throughout the process, the design team will continue to engage with local residents to ensure the final result reflects community aspirations. This transformative project underscores the power of thoughtful design to enrich urban spaces and create a lasting legacy for Wandsworth and its residents.
