TOP DOWN BOTTOM UP! Collective Action for the Just City – Family Saturdays

Sat 6th and Sat 14th June

Event Type
Exhibition
Audience
This event is for Families This event is for Young people aged 10-16

'Join us for one of our two special family Saturdays at NOW Gallery to explore and contribute to a 1:300 scale model of Bondeni, a thriving informal settlement in Nakuru, Kenya. Our volunteers will be on hand to help families build additions to the model.

TOP DOWN BOTTOM UP! brings together Bondeni residents with architects and communities in the UK. Using Scenerii, an interactive software, residents will design the Just City model that Londoners will collaboratively build using recycled materials.

Alongside the model we will trace the colonial origins of inequality in Kenyan cities. Contemporary aerial photography by Johnny Miller will show this historic inequality mapped onto Kenya’s cities today. The exhibition will also highlight how Kenya’s 2010 constitution enshrines the right to participation in planning processes.

The exhibition is a collaboration between the Just City Working Group Kenya, a collective empowering Nakuru residents to shape urban development in their communities, and Citizen Architects.
