"Reality Check” amplifies the unheard voices of local youth in public space design. Westminster University's Urban Design MA students reimagined an underused public park in the Church Street and Little Venice area, through genuine listening to teenagers from City of Westminster College, a demographic whose voices are frequently overlooked in design decisions that directly affect their daily lives.
We began with a dynamic workshop where MA students and teenagers walked together through the park; conducted a critical "reality check" voicing concerns and aspirations about safety, accessibility, and belonging; and brainstormed sketch design proposals responding to issues identified.
"Reality Check" invites visitors to explore how the MA students translated the workshop insights into thoughtful interventions, while providing the local Council with valuable input. We also invite the College students to view the final proposals and provide feedback, creating an ongoing dialogue that continues to value their voices in the design process.
