This event is for Everyone This event is for Local residents

Join Bell Phillips for a film screening of ‘In the Shadow of the Shard’, a documentary by John Rogers that follows estate residents in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe who are taking action to transform where they live. The film tells the inspiring story of the Leathermarket Community Benefit Society, a community group that has successfully built Marklake Court - 27 new 100% council homes on the Kipling Estate—just yards from The Shard.

After the film there will be a panel discussion about social housing, co-design and estate regeneration with some of the voices behind the project. The event will end with networking on Bermondsey Square.

Marklake Court

Bell Phillips co-designed Marklake Court with residents and it has gone on to become a shining example of what a new council house building can achieve when it embraces the true spirit of partnership. Built on the site of under-utilised garages on the Kipling Estate, the new homes created a ‘chain of benefit’, helping to alleviate overcrowding and build a stronger, more connected community. The building opened in 2018 and has positively impacted the lives of 100 families and is the first of several successful developments led by the Leathermarket CBS across Southwark.

Panellists

- Jay Morton, Director at Bell Phillips Architects
- John Rogers, Filmmaker
- Tessa Boase, Social Historian and Campaigner
- John Lynch, founding member of the Leathermarket Community Benefit Society
