Join Populo Living, Newham’s wholly owned housing company, for an insightful discussion exploring the vital role of community and Meanwhile Projects in shaping regeneration, led by award winning architect Jan Kattein.

This session draws together a range of stakeholder voices involved in re-imagining the Carpenters Estate, including how the community shaped the Meanwhile Projects to create a lasting legacy.

A tour of the projects finishes at the Carpenters Dialogue Express Café – a repurposed train carriage – with time for refreshments and networking. This new cafe, managed by Dialogue Hub, will be training those with hearing impairments to be baristas. The talks and tour will review how thoughtful, participatory design can shape the future of our neighbourhoods, ensuring that regeneration reflects the needs and hopes of existing, and future, residents.

Speakers:
• Yanni Pitsillides, Area Regeneration Manager, London Borough of Newham
• Clare Neilson, Project Manager at Populo Living,
• Jan Kattein, Director Jan Kattein Architects,
• Jen Storan, Projects Director, Meanwhile Space,
• Hakan Elbir, CEO of Dialogue Hub, and
• A Carpenters Estate resident

Themes explored will be re-activating existing spaces, using sustainable materials that support future generations, and embedding flexibility into design to create places that can evolve and change with the community to deliver a legacy.
Other Meanwhile projects on the estate include:
• Resident co-designed artworks
• Sustainably built playgrounds using rescued materials
• A Steel Warriors calisthenics gym made out of knives reclaimed from the streets

Expect an engaging discussion, with contributions from voices passionate about shaping sustainable, people-centred spaces.
