"A House is Art." Discover the work of Japanese architect Kazuo Shinohara, and build your own model of his celebrated Umbrella House. Add your voice to fresh conversations around family housing, and be part of a publishing project by artist Michaela Nettell. A fun day of model-making, origami and collage activities for children aged 5-12 and their parents/carers.
Umbrella House was inspired by traditional oiled-paper umbrellas known as karakasa (から傘). For children and adults alike it evokes an archetypal image of a hut or den. By looking again at one of Shinohara’s smallest built works we can ask, what are the basic architectural elements of a home or shelter? What adaptations need to be made to contemporary housing design in response to changing rainfall patterns and global warming? How might we build better shelters for ourselves and our families into the future?
Designed and led by writer Yuki Sumner, and architects Héloïse Le Carrer (IF_DO) & Takeshi Hayatsu (Hayatsu Architects). Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
