Join members of the Save Brick Lane campaign for a day of architectural exploration at the Hason Raja Centre—a new hub dedicated to arts, crafts, and architectural discourse.

This half-day conference brings together activists, community groups, academics, and local residents to discuss the future of Brick Lane, a contested space where the City’s expansion has fueled debates on gentrification and cultural preservation. Expect insightful presentations from heritage groups, activists, and student researchers.

Speakers from local campaigns and heritage societies will share perspectives on the significance of Brick Lane, the challenges it faces, and ongoing efforts to protect its cultural and historical identity. Workshops will explore how grassroots activism has gained momentum post-COVID-19 and how campaigners can more effectively advocate for their communities.

Speakers include:

Dr. Tanzil Shafique, a Lecturer in Urban Design and Director of Postgraduate Programmes at The University of Sheffield School of Architecture. His MA Urban Design students have conducted research projects on Brick Lane.

Saif Osmani, a visual artist and architectural designer, is a UCL Bartlett graduate and co-founder of the Bengali East End Heritage Society, part of the Save Brick Lane coalition.

Puru Miah, a local father, union organiser, and former Labour Councillor for Mile End ward, played a key role in shaping the strategic direction of the Save Brick Lane campaign.

Additionally, we will hear insights from most recent findings from UCL Development Planning Unit master's students, from the recently established Tower Hamlets Parents Forum, and about the Fairville London Lab, a European social science initiative focused on co-producing democratic solutions to urban inequalities.

The half-day conference is ideal for community members, local groups, researchers, and academics eager to learn more about the local area and explore tools for effective activism. Attendees are encouraged to stay for the full duration. A table will be available for sharing materials from your own campaigns.

The day concludes with a guided tour of Brick Lane, offering firsthand insights into its architectural and cultural heritage.
