10 Years
This is a show of present and past student work from the BA (Hons) Photography course spanning the last 10 years. It will consist of images of architecture and urban landscapes around London. This is an area of photography that has been a great strength of the course and the work on show will form a brief snapshot of the range of approaches that students have undertaken.
A4/M4 Heading West – Peter Bennett
A4/M4 Heading West explores the route of the major transport artery that runs through the borough of Hounslow providing access to the west of the country. This route is also known as the Golden Mile due to the conglomeration of industry that lines the side of the road. By presenting a sequence of images, largely devoid of traffic, the work forms a close-up examination of the architectural structures, car show rooms, road signage and corporate offices, as well as the parkland and natural habitat that line the way. These are the overlooked spaces, dominated by the presence of the road, that travellers pass through en route to other destinations. The intention of the work is to slow down the gaze, contrasting the sense of stillness and motion inherent in viewing this landscape, which was originally designed mainly around the car.
