From Sutton High Street to a Permanent Home

The 'Moon Bloom' installation, a celebrated feature of the 2024 London Festival of Architecture, is embarking on a new journey as it relocates from Sutton High Street to a permanent home at the London Cancer Hub in Belmont. Originally designed by Adrienne Lau of the Edgy Collective, the installation was created to celebrate Sutton’s rich cultural diversity and history, while also fostering sustainability in urban spaces.

Following its tenure in the heart of Sutton and its role in the vibrant Moon Festival celebration last September, 'Moon Bloom' will now take root in the London Cancer Hub’s Community Garden. This newly revitalized green space, developed by Socius, is designed as a sanctuary for staff, patients, and visitors—offering an environment of peace, reflection, and connection to nature.

A Design That Inspires Wellbeing

At its core, 'Moon Bloom' is an urban garden installation that invites the public to engage with nature in a meaningful way. Featuring raised planting beds filled with vibrant flora, the installation draws inspiration from moon gates—traditional circular openings in Chinese gardens that symbolize welcome and transition.

Its new location at the London Cancer Hub is particularly fitting. As a leading centre for cancer research and treatment, the Hub provides an environment where science, healing, and human experience converge. 'Moon Bloom' will enhance the therapeutic atmosphere of the Community Garden, offering a place of solace and inspiration for all who visit.

A Legacy of Art and Community

Councillor Jake Short, Chair of Sutton Council’s Housing, Economy, and Business Committee, expressed enthusiasm for the relocation: "I am delighted that the borough's first-ever moon gate will be relocating to the London Cancer Hub Community Garden after starting out at Trinity Square in Sutton town centre."

Designer Adrienne Lau echoed these sentiments, reflecting on the installation’s journey: "It is a true honour to continue Moon Bloom’s public contribution by re-homing it in the Community Garden of London Cancer Hub, where it can positively impact the healthcare environment and the wellbeing of its community."

The relocation of 'Moon Bloom' ensures that its artistic and environmental message will endure, enriching the lives of those who encounter it.

The Future of the London Cancer Hub

The London Cancer Hub, home to esteemed institutions such as the Royal Marsden Hospital and the Institute of Cancer Research, is undergoing significant transformation. In partnership with Aviva Capital Partners and Socius, ambitious plans are in motion to develop up to one million square feet of research, treatment, and innovation spaces. These developments will not only drive groundbreaking cancer research but will also bring thousands of high-quality jobs to the borough.

By integrating art, science, and community, the relocation of 'Moon Bloom' to the London Cancer Hub embodies the spirit of sustainable and thoughtful urban design. As it settles into its new home, it continues to serve as a symbol of beauty, resilience, and the power of public space to inspire and heal.
